Submissions Guidelines

  • General guidelines: Articles are primarily informative, used to advance a position or critique with a reasoned argument, speculative (by posing an open-ended question or dilemma), or a hybrid of these. However, the goals of all articles are to promote discussion and to provoke thought in the analysis of a specific societal issue, practice, or policy as it relates to ethics as conceived by the writer. ("Societal" is used broadly here to include business, medical, legal, governmental, etc.) Submission entitles the Journal of Ethics at Berkeley to republish the submitted article, including, but not limited to, archiving on the journal's website and printing in future issues of the journal. The author retains all rights to his or her work.
  • Word limits and citations: Articles are not subject to maximum word limits, though articles advancing a position or critique should have well-reasoned and complete analyses. We ask for a minimum 1000 words. Citations are encouraged for claims not common knowledge.
  • Timing: Submissions are accepted year-round, though the articles for the current cycle are needed by April 1, 2012. These articles will be published in Volume 1, Number 2 of the journal, which will be distributed in the fall of 2012.
  • Format: Please format submissions in 12 point, Times New Roman, single-spaced, .doc or .docx files.
